The book is a pictorial history of motorcycling in Australia. It is illustrated with many colour plates and monochrome pictures that provide not only a documentary record of motorcycles over the years but also an insight into the social context of motorcycling as it was.
Included are many glorious photographs from the Harold H. Paynting Collection of the LaTrobe Library in Victoria, most unpublished before or since. These images document in excellent detail many of Australia's best examples of privately owned vintage and classic motorcycles, including many that are rarely seen in public.
This book will be treasured by anyone with an interest in motorcycles and doubly so by anyone interested in old motorcycles and the times of the people who rode them. It is a comprehensive record of vintage, veteran and classic motorcycles in Australia from 1899 to 1980.
In addition to the many splendid photographs, the text in the book deals variously with...
- Motorcycle advertising literature describing the old machines.
- Reproduction pages of motorcycle handbooks.
- Extracts from the "Australian Motor Cycle"
- Police motorcycling
- Motorcycles in the Australian military forces
- Motorcycle speedway racing
- Motor sport
- Motorcycle builders and modifiers throughout Australia over the years
The fifth volume is the first to deal totally with motorcycles and it treats the subject exhaustively
Melbourne Age
If you're mad on motor bikes 'Motorcycling in Australia' is something you must get hold of - even if you have to give up booze and cigarettes.
Footscray Times
The photographs are magnificent. The book has some extraordinary detail on things such as World War I motorcycle use and 'early day champs and their accomplishments' the book would be treasured by any motorcyclist.
Adelaide Advertiser
Everything about the book reeks of quality. Like an expensive piece of machinery, the book has the feel of quality and the smell of almost decadent luxury.
